San Francisco Breech Delivery Injury

What is a Breech Delivery Injury?

During normal deliveries, infants are born head first.  During breech deliveries, infants emerge from their mothers' birth canals feet first, which can present numerous complications.  Two of the most common obstacles physicians must contend with during breech deliveries are umbilical cords being wrapped around infants' necks, which can lead to oxygen deficiency and strangulation if no immediate action is taken, and head entrapment.  When the infant's head is trapped inside of a mother's birth canal, the infant may incur head trauma, brain damage, brachial plexus injury or oxygen deficiency.

Types of Breech Delivery

There are 3 different types of breech delivery: frank breech, complete breech and footling breech.  If a fetus' buttocks are aimed toward the birth canal, it is frank breech.  If the buttocks are down and the legs are folded at the knees, it is complete breech.  Lastly, if one or both of the infant's feet are pointing down and emerge before the head, it is called footling breech.

Breech Delivery Causes

There are numerous reasons why an infant may be born breech.  Sometimes, breech deliveries result from mothers having abnormal pelvis, uterus or abdominal wall shapes, malformation of fetuses, functional abnormalities of fetuses and mothers having too much amniotic fluid.  These are natural causes that have to do with genetics.  Other times, babies are born breech due to the negligence of medical professionals who are overseeing mothers' deliveries and births.

When mothers give birth to infants that are breech and medical negligence played a role in their deliveries, they may have the right to file a personal injury claim if their children were injured.  In order to be successful with their claims, mothers and fathers will want to work with an experienced San Francisco breech delivery injury lawyer.
